This is what works for me. A simple list, but getting clear on it took me a couple years of trial/error.
Necessary:
- Pen+paper or Voice recorder
- I take detailed notes or record every important conversation I have with other people. And I consider most conversations I have to be important.
- Voice notes easier to create, and probably a good practice to get comfortable speaking for parts.
- I like pen+paper best overall. Why? To stay focused. Parts talk fast, and I can't faithfully hold a dozen thoughts in my head at once. When my mind wanders from the convo, I just glance at the only thing in front of me, and I’m back on track.
- Don't "interpret" what parts say, just record it in their words, when they say it. Interpret later, if needed.
- Calendar
- I’ve added parts/parts-work to my calendar, but that's not what I mean here. I'm talking about having a dedicated time to do parts-work every day. For me it's 2-15 minutes before I start my work day. The only requirement I set for myself is to sit down (with pen+paper) and try. Use focusmate.com for added accountability!
May be helpful sometimes
- Timer
- This can help reduce any anxiety of "how do I know when I'm done?"
- Database / archive of all parts
- If you're like me, you might meet 100 parts in a year. Is this one the same as that one? Might not be important. For me, trying to fit every part into an external system has been a great way to avoid doing parts work.
- I recommend memorializing precious exiles, and keeping notes on just the most active protectors in your world. The aim is to facilitate parts speaking (and Self listening); making a pretty database and deciding how to categorize each can add lots of friction.
Tools to avoid
- Anything with a screen
- I mentioned taking notes when I have an important convo. Doesn't it feel good, seeing someone take your speech so seriously? Now imagine they're typing those notes instead...
- Phone / computer are the most distracting things I own. Antithetical to good listening.
